What Is Beta Naphthol Used For?
The classic practical is the azo dye test for an aromatic amino group. Aniline is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, cooled in an ice bath and diazotised with a cold sodium nitrite solution; the resulting diazonium salt is then poured into beta naphthol dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution. An orange-red to scarlet precipitate of the azo dye forms almost at once, which both confirms the amine and demonstrates how synthetic dyes are built by coupling reactions.
Keep the ice bath cold throughout, because diazonium salts decompose on warming and the colour will then be weak. Weigh the solid on a clean spatula, avoid inhaling dust, and wear gloves, as the compound irritates skin. Store the bottle closed and away from light, since the solid tends to darken on long exposure to air and light.
