The tong is the hand tool for every crucible practical: lifting a crucible of hydrated salt off the pipe clay triangle to cool and weigh it, tilting or replacing a crucible lid while magnesium ribbon burns, moving a hot china dish off the gauze after evaporation, and transferring ignited residues into a desiccator. It is also used to hold a strip of metal in the flame for combustion demonstrations.

Grip the crucible around its body rather than by the rim alone so it cannot tip, and hold the tong near the end of the handles, away from the hot tips. Place heated ware on a heat-resistant surface, never on a wet bench. Because stainless steel is chemical resistant, the tong copes with acidic fumes from heated samples; wipe it clean and dry after each session so residues do not build up on the tips.
