What Is Fehling A Solution Used For?
Equal volumes of Fehling A and Fehling B are poured into a test tube to give a deep blue mixture, the sample is added, and the tube is warmed in a water bath or over a gentle flame. Glucose, fructose, maltose and simple aliphatic aldehydes such as formaldehyde reduce the copper(II) ions, and a red to orange precipitate of copper(I) oxide settles out. Sucrose, most ketones and aromatic aldehydes such as benzaldehyde do not give this result, which lets students separate these groups in functional-group analysis.
