Ignition Tubes (Product Code: SCL-695/093) are small tubes of clear borosilicate glass designed for heating a few milligrams of a solid strongly in a burner flame. Chemistry students meet them in two practicals above all: the sodium fusion (Lassaigne's) test for nitrogen, sulphur and halogens in organic compounds, and the dry heating tests that open a qualitative salt analysis. The glass is heat resistant and chemical resistant, so it tolerates red heat and contact with molten reagents far better than soft glass. Ignition tubes are a standard consumable in any salt analysis kit for schools, and these are made by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India.
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Product Code | SCL-695/093 |
| Material | Borosilicate glass |
| Colour | Clear |
| Resistance | Heat resistant, chemical resistant |
| Application | Used in laboratory work for strong heating of small samples |
For the sodium fusion test, a pea-sized piece of dried sodium and a little of the organic compound are heated in the tube, gently at first and then to red heat. The glowing tube is plunged into distilled water in a china dish, where it shatters; the mixture is boiled, filtered, and the filtrate used to test for nitrogen, sulphur and halogens. In salt analysis, a small amount of the salt is heated in a dry ignition tube while the student notes any gas given off, a change of colour, crackling or a sublimate on the cooler upper wall. These observations point towards the ions present before any wet tests begin.
Always wear eye protection, hold the tube with a holder and point its mouth away from everyone. Cut sodium into small pieces with forceps and a knife, keep the rest under kerosene, and perform the plunging step behind a screen or at arm's length. Tubes used for fusion are broken as part of the method, so plan on one per test and dispose of the fragments in a glass-waste bin.
ScienceLab is the trade name of Jain Scientific Equipments Private Limited, a laboratory apparatus and glassware manufacturer located in Ambala, Haryana, serving schools, colleges and dealers in India and international markets. Read more on the ScienceLab company profile.
For fusion and dry heating tests, ignition tubes are ordered with:
Browse the Chemistry Lab category for more glassware and reagents.
What size are the ignition tubes?
Dimensions are not specified in this listing. Please tell us the size your practical manual calls for through the contact page and we will confirm what can be supplied.
Can ignition tubes be reused?
Tubes used in sodium fusion are broken during the test, so they are single-use. After a dry heating test, a tube that is intact and clean can be reused.
Why are they made of borosilicate glass?
Borosilicate glass is heat resistant and chemical resistant, so it withstands strong heating in a burner flame and contact with hot reagents.
What safety equipment is needed?
Eye protection, a tube holder, forceps for handling sodium and a screen or safe distance for the plunging step.
How many tubes should we order?
Plan on at least one tube per student per fusion test, plus spares. Pack quantities are confirmed when you enquire.
Do you supply ignition tubes in bulk or for export?
Yes. ScienceLab supplies institutions and dealers in India and international markets.
Send the number of tubes and students through the contact page, or add Ignition Tubes (SCL-695/093) to the enquiry cart with sodium metal and china dishes for a combined quotation.
