What Is Manganese Dioxide Used For?
In the oxygen practical, a spatula of manganese dioxide goes into a conical flask and hydrogen peroxide is added through a thistle funnel; the liquid froths, and the oxygen, collected over water in gas jars with standard gas collection apparatus, relights a glowing splint. If the black solid is filtered off, dried and weighed at the end, its mass is unchanged – simple evidence that a catalyst speeds up a reaction without being consumed. Changing the amount of catalyst and timing the volume of gas collected turns the same set-up into an investigation of reaction rate.
