Typical Use
The person being measured stands with the arm relaxed at the side. The measurer locates the midpoint between the tip of the shoulder and the tip of the elbow on the upper arm, wraps the tape around the arm at that level so it lies flat against the skin without squeezing the tissue, and reads the circumference to the nearest millimetre at the window or overlap. Repeating the measurement and averaging two close readings reduces observer error, particularly in surveys where many staff take measurements.
Because the tape is made of stretch-resistant synthetic paper, repeated use does not lengthen it and skew results, and the solvent-resistant print survives wiping with alcohol between clients. Nursing colleges and public-health trainers also use it among their biology teaching aids in India to show students how arm circumference reflects muscle and fat reserves.
