What Is Universal pH 1-14 Paper Used For?
A common exercise is to test equal-strength solutions of hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, ammonia solution and sodium hydroxide side by side, so students see that strong and weak acids (or alkalis) give clearly different colours even at the same concentration. The paper is equally useful for following how pH changes as an acid is progressively diluted, for checking the pH of salt solutions, and for confirming that waste is close to neutral before disposal.
Place a drop of sample on a leaf resting on a clean spotting tile or watch glass, then match the colour against the pH colour reference at once. Use only dilute solutions with students, and have them wear goggles and gloves when strong acids or alkalis are on the bench.
