What Is the Spectrometer Used For?
As a prism spectrometer, it lets students find the angle of the prism and the angle of minimum deviation, and from these the refractive index and dispersive power of the glass. Fitted with a diffraction grating in the 25 x 25 mm holder, it becomes a grating spectrometer for measuring the wavelengths of spectral lines from a sodium or other spectral lamp. The 0.1° vernier reading supports genuinely quantitative results rather than simple demonstrations.
Good results start with adjustment. Focus the Ramsden eyepiece on the cross wires, set the telescope and collimator for parallel light using the spiral focusing, then level the prism table with its three screws. Keep the slit narrow but bright, lock the scale before taking a reading, and keep the instrument covered and away from dust after use. Only the tommy bar and screwdriver supplied should be used for axis adjustments.
