Gravity filtration is one of the first separation techniques students learn: a folded filter paper is placed in a funnel, the funnel is held above a conical flask or beaker, and the mixture is poured in so the solid stays on the paper and the clear filtrate collects below. Holding the funnel by hand is tiring and risks spills, so a holder frees both hands for pouring and rinsing. With the inner lid in place, small funnels sit securely for filtering a few millilitres in salt analysis; lift the lid out and the outer ring takes a larger funnel for filtering a whole reaction mixture or decanting a solution.

The double version is handy when comparing two filtrations, such as filtering the same mixture through different papers, or when two students share one bench position. Position the stem of the funnel so it touches the inside wall of the receiving vessel; this speeds filtration and prevents splashing. Because the holder is non-corrosive, it can simply be rinsed after contact with dilute acids or salt solutions and left to dry.
