Glazed Tiles (Product Code: SCL-581/040) are white, square ceramic tiles with a crisp, smooth glazed surface that is easy to clean and maintain. In the chemistry laboratory they serve as a clean white background, most often placed under the conical flask during a titration so that the colour change at the end point is easy to judge, and also as a smooth surface for spotting drops of indicator. A tile for every student station is a small but useful part of a titration kit for school practicals. The tiles are supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India.

In acid–base titrations with indicators such as methyl orange or phenolphthalein, place the tile on the base of the burette stand directly under the flask. Against the white glaze the first permanent tint is much easier to see, so students are less likely to overshoot the end point. In redox titrations that use an external indicator – for example ferrous ammonium sulphate against potassium dichromate with potassium ferricyanide – drops of indicator are placed in a row on the tile, and a drop of the titration mixture is touched to one of them after each addition until the colour no longer appears.
In a volumetric analysis kit for a class, allow one tile per burette so every student works against the same background. Rinse the tile with distilled water and wipe it dry after each titration so that no trace of indicator is left to confuse the next reading. The tile is not a heating surface: glazed ceramic can crack if it is heated suddenly, so keep it off burners and hot plates and use a wire gauze on a tripod for heating.
ScienceLab is the trading name of Jain Scientific Equipments Private Limited in Ambala, Haryana. The company supplies accessories like these glazed tiles, so a titration station can be equipped completely by institutions in India and international markets. The company profile has more information.

What size are the tiles?
The size is not stated. Please ask through our contact page and we will confirm it before you order.
Why is a white tile used under the titration flask?
A plain white background makes faint colour changes easier to see, which helps students stop exactly at the end point.
Can the tile be used for spot tests?
Yes. Its smooth glazed surface keeps separate drops of indicator or reagent apart, so each can be tested in turn.
Can I heat things on it?
We do not recommend it. Sudden heating can crack glazed ceramic; use a wire gauze and tripod instead.
How do I clean it?
Rinse with water, finish with distilled water and wipe dry. The smooth glaze does not hold stains easily.
Can you supply tiles for a whole class or for export?
Yes. Tell us the number of titration stations; we supply buyers in India and international markets.
