What Is a Hegar Dilator Used For?
Before the uterus can be evacuated, the cervical canal has to be opened wide enough for a curette or scoop to pass. The clinician inserts the dilators one after another, starting with the smallest diameter and stepping up gradually until the canal accepts the instrument that will be used. The rounded, smooth ends are made to be non-traumatic.
