What Is the Laryngoscope Set Used For?
During intubation the anaesthetist or emergency clinician holds the handle, inserts the lit blade into the mouth and lifts the tongue and jaw to bring the vocal cords into view, then passes an endotracheal tube into the trachea. Curved Macintosh blades sit in front of the epiglottis, while the straight Miller blade lifts the epiglottis directly – an approach often preferred for infants and small children, which is why a Miller No. 1 accompanies the three Macintosh sizes.
Keep the set ready on the anaesthesia or emergency trolley with fresh C cells, and check that the bulb lights when each blade is engaged on the handle. After every use, remove the bulb, wash and disinfect the blades and bulbs, and sterilise the stainless steel parts. Take the batteries out if the laryngoscope will be stored for a long time.
