What Is the Adult Hand Resuscitator Used For?
A hand resuscitator lets a rescuer breathe for a patient who is not breathing adequately, for example during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, during transfer, or while recovering from anaesthesia. The mask is sealed over the nose and mouth, each squeeze of the silicone bag delivers a breath through the non-rebreathing valve, and the bag then refills itself with air, or with oxygen when O2 tubing and the reservoir bag are connected.
The patient valve includes a pressure-limiting valve, but the resuscitator should only be used by staff trained in airway management. After each patient, take the set apart, clean and disinfect or autoclave the parts, then reassemble it and check that the bag refills and the valves move freely before it goes back on the emergency trolley.
