Parafilm
Parafilm (Product Code: SLE/CH/215) is a two-way stretch sealing film used to close the mouths of flasks, test tubes, beakers and dishes when a stopper or lid is not practical. Pulled gently in both directions, it clings around irregular shapes and surfaces and forms a snug seal against evaporation and dust. Typical Use
Technicians use the film to cover conical flasks holding prepared solutions or broth, to seal test tubes before they are shaken, to wrap the rim of culture plates during incubation, and to close a measuring cylinder so it can be inverted for mixing. In microbiology lab work it is also used to keep plates and small containers from drying out while they are stored. Because it stretches up to 200%, a small square is usually enough for a flask neck, which keeps usage economical.
Cut a piece a little larger than the opening, stretch it across, then wrap and press it down the sides so it grips. Keep it away from heat: with a melting temperature of 60°C it is not for hot plates, ovens or autoclaves. Its resistance to salt, acid and alkaline solutions is rated for up to 48 hours, so for longer storage switch to a proper stopper or cap, and never rely on it with diethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride or similar solvents.
