What Is the Shrinkage Limit Set Used For?
As a wet clay dries it shrinks, but only down to a certain water content; after that, air enters the voids and the volume stays constant. To find that point, a wet soil pat is dried in the shrinkage dish and its dry volume is measured by mercury displacement: the glass cup is filled with mercury, levelled with the Perspex plate, and the dry pat is pressed under the surface with the three metal prongs so the displaced mercury can be measured.
Soils with a low shrinkage limit and high volumetric shrinkage tend to crack on drying and heave on wetting, which matters for foundations, canal linings and pavements. Mercury is toxic, so work over a tray, avoid skin contact and follow your institution's handling and disposal rules. The set suits teaching labs that want a complete Atterberg-limits bench.
