What Is the Stroboscope Used For?
A stroboscope makes a moving part appear frozen: when the flash rate matches the rotation, the shaft is lit in the same position every time. Students use it to read the speed of motors, fans and machine shafts without touching them, and to watch vibrating or rotating parts in apparent slow motion during motion studies.
For speed measurement, run the internal oscillator in the suitable frequency range and adjust until the target appears stationary, then read the flash rate on the rear-panel display. Because a shaft can also look still at whole-number fractions of its true speed, start high and come down to the first stationary image to avoid a false reading. In external trigger mode, another frequency-generating device sets the flash rate, which helps synchronise the flash with other experiments.
