What Is the Unconfined Compression Tester Used For?

A trimmed cylinder of clay, with its ends shaped by the coning tools, is set between the cone seatings and squeezed axially with no side support. The motor drives the platen at the selected strain rate while a proving ring, fitted through the adaptor, shows the load and a dial gauge on the strain bracket shows how much the specimen shortens. The peak stress reached is the unconfined compressive strength.

Because roughly half of that value approximates the undrained shear strength of saturated clay, the test is a quick input for foundation and slope checks, and comparing undisturbed with remoulded samples shows how sensitive a clay is.
