What Is a Venturi Face Mask Used For?
A Venturi mask is chosen when a clinician wants a known oxygen percentage rather than simply a flow. Oxygen passing through the jet draws in room air through side ports, so the mixture reaching the patient stays at the concentration printed on the jet and the mask provides the total inspiratory flow at that FiO2. Changing the jet, and setting the flowmeter to the rate marked for it, changes the concentration.
For example, the 28 % jet runs at 4 LPM, while the 50 % jet needs 10 LPM. The nose clip and strap are adjusted for a secure fit, and the humidity cup can be used where humidified air entrainment is wanted. Each mask is a non-sterile, single-use item, to be discarded after use by one patient in line with ward practice.
