What Is an Oxygen Flow Meter Used For?
The flowmeter is the control point between an oxygen supply and the patient. It plugs into a wall outlet or cylinder regulator through its DISS inlet, and the nurse turns the knob until the float in the transparent Thorpe tube lines up with the prescribed flow. Because the design is pressure compensated, the reading stays accurate across the inlet pressures it is specified for, and the scale can be read from more than 270 degrees around the tube.
Low flows, such as those used with nasal prongs, are read against graduations of 0.5 L/min or finer, while higher flows for masks use steps of up to 1 L/min. A humidifier bottle can be attached downstream where humidified oxygen is wanted. The body is wiped with a damp cloth and disinfectant between patients, and the built-in inlet filter helps keep particles out of the valve.
