What Is the Falling Head Permeability Apparatus Used For?
In silts, clays and fine sands, water moves so slowly that collecting a measurable volume at constant head would take too long. Instead, water is allowed to fall in a narrow standpipe above the specimen, and the time taken for the level to drop between two marks, together with the standpipe area and the specimen length and area, gives the coefficient of permeability.
The results feed into the design of clay liners, earth dams, foundations and drainage, and students can compare compacted and undisturbed samples of the same soil.
