What Is the Le Chatelier Mould Used For?
Unsound cement contains constituents that keep expanding after the cement has set, which can crack hardened mortar and concrete; the Le Chatelier test detects this. The mould is set on a glass plate, filled with cement paste, covered with a second plate and stored, then heated in water, and the increase in distance between the indicator points shows how far the cement has expanded. The long stems magnify the tiny movement of the split so it can be read with an ordinary scale.
Because two or three moulds are needed for each test, laboratories normally keep moulds in sets. Before use, check that the split edges close evenly and the stems are straight, and lightly oil the inside so the hardened paste releases cleanly.
