What Is the U-Box Test Used For?
Self-compacting concrete has to fill every corner of the formwork and pass between bars under nothing but its own weight. The U-box checks both properties at once. The left-hand section is filled with about 20 litres of fresh concrete using the scoop and trowel, the gate is lifted, and the concrete flows through the rebars and rises into the right-hand section.
Once the flow stops, the concrete height in each section is measured; the closer the two heights, the better the mix fills and passes. The stopwatch lets the lab note how quickly the concrete moves. Dampen the inside of the box before each test, set the frame on firm, level ground, and wash the box out before the concrete sets.
