What Is the Concrete Cube Mould Used For?

Cube moulds turn a fresh batch of concrete or mortar into identical test specimens. The mould is assembled on its base plate, lightly oiled inside, filled in layers and compacted by hand rod or on a vibrating table, then struck off level. After initial setting the sides are released, the cube is cured, and it is finally crushed in a compression testing machine to report strength.

The 150 mm and 100 mm moulds suit concrete, while the 70.6 mm three gang mould casts three cement mortar cubes at once and the 50 mm cast iron mould is intended for mortar. Clamp type moulds open into two or four parts for easy stripping; light weight versions are easier to carry between site and lab. Clean and dry each mould after use to keep the machined faces true.
