What Is the Dial Penetrometer Used For?
Choose a plunger to suit the ground — a broad tip for soft clay or loose sand, a slender one for stiff material — then hold the instrument square to the soil face and press it in with a steady push. The peak hold keeps the highest reading on the dial after the plunger is withdrawn, and a press of the button returns the needle to zero for the next test. Readings are then related to cohesion in clays or friction angle in sands.
