What Is a Concrete Straight Edge Used For?
Once a cube or cylinder mould has been filled and compacted, the surface must finish flush with the rim so the specimen has the correct height and a flat face. The straight edge is laid across the top of the mould and drawn over it with a gentle side-to-side sawing action, cutting away surplus concrete in one or two passes. The same bar is used to level off the measuring container in air meter tests and to tidy the top of the slump cone before it is lifted.
